Japanese Breakfast performed live at the Ritz Music Venue in Raleigh on June 14, 2022.

Japanese Breakfast is an alternative pop band lead by Korean American musician Michelle Zauner. The band’s debut album was released in 2016 called “Psychopomp”. Two more albums followed with the release of her 2017 album “Soft Sounds from Another World” and then the 2021 release called “Jubillee”. Japanese Breakfast “Jubilee” album was nominated for best alternative album and best new artist at the 64th annual Grammy awards. We covered her performance in Raleigh North Carolina at the Ritz Music Venue.

I have seen Japanese breakfast before and was very excited to be covering them again. They bring such a fun and happy vibe to their show and everyone in the venue can feel it. Michelle Zauner sounded great and was really enjoying being there. The crowd started screaming when she came out and raising their hands in excitement. As she went into her first song, she would hit a large flat gong during certain parts of the song, what was cool about this gong is that it would light up every time she hit it. It gave us this interesting visual confirmation the gong was being hit; the implementation of that was a nice touch. The venue was packed, and everyone was really enjoying their performance. Japanese Breakfast is a band that really is unique not only in their sound but also in their performance. Keep an eye out for them when they are in your area, definitely a show you should check out.
