L.A WITCH LIVE!! | PINHOOK IN DURHAM
On Friday, August 12, I strolled into a small club in downtown Durham, North Carolina called The Pinhook to check out the band L.A. Witch. The club was packed and getting warmed up with the opening band Cor de Lux. Once L.A. Witch took the stage, the room was flooded with red & purple lighting and the cool vibe their music gives off completely took over the room.
Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the trio was formed in 2011. With Sade Sanchez on lead vocals & guitar, bassist Irita Pai and Ellie English on drums, you can’t help but be completely drawn in as soon as they start playing. The mood is mellow and the music is seductive. You are transported by a sound that is raw, slow and real. Sade’s guitar is gritty with mesmerizing vocals. Irita’s bass playing is heavy and in your face and Ellie’s drums completely pull it all together. The crowd was taking it all in and the band had total control of the room. Their self titled album L.A. WITCH was released in 2017 and in 2020 they released PLAY WITH FIRE. Songs like ‘Baby in Blue Jeans’, ‘Brian’ and ‘Drive Your Car’ are some of their most played and they give me visions of smoky, dimly lit bars with a boozy drink in hand when I hear them. Their performance was flawless and they absolutely made a huge impression in Durham.
