I’ve been a fan of Vertical Horizon for many years. I first heard them in the late ’90s when a friend shared their There and Back Again album with me. From what I’ve read, that record was actually a re‑release of their independent 1992 debut.

I listened to some of that early material, but everything changed when the band signed with RCA and released Everything You Want in 1999. I loved—and still love—that album. It’s packed with great songs and became a massive success, producing four major hits including “You’re a God” and the title track “Everything You Want.”

The band also reached a huge milestone when “You’re a God” was featured on the soundtrack for Bruce Almighty, a film that earned $242 million domestically and $484 million worldwide, making it the fifth highest‑grossing movie of 2003. That placement brought the band’s music to an even wider audience.

Since then, Vertical Horizon has gone through several personal and professional changes. They left RCA in 2004 and later signed with Hybrid Records. Longtime drummer Ed Toth also departed to pursue other opportunities.

Despite the shifts, the band has continued to create strong, meaningful music. Their performance at the White Oak Amphitheater in Greensboro proved they still have it. Matt Scannell sounded fantastic, and the rest of the band played with tight, effortless chemistry. The current lineup includes Matt Scannell, Ron LaVella, Donovan White, and Mark Pacificar. They’re currently touring with Gin Blossoms and Tonic, and they released a new album in early 2018. One highlight from that record is the song “I’m Going to Save You.”
