Duncan Fellows — Live at Kings, Raleigh NC

Before diving into their incredible performance at Kings in downtown Raleigh, it’s worth sharing a bit of history about the band. Duncan Fellows is made up of five musicians, each bringing their own creative spark to the group. Friends from Austin, Texas, they formed the band in 2012 and released their first EP, Twelve Years Older, in 2013, followed by Marrow in 2015. Marrow climbed to the number three spot on the iTunes Best Seller list for Alternative EPs, helping the band expand both their sound and their fan base.

The Show

Duncan Fellows played Kings on 10/20/2019. I arrived a little early and noticed a few people already waiting at the front door. One fan spotted my camera and asked who I was there to photograph. When I told him I was covering Duncan Fellows, he lit up instantly: “Oh man! I love them. I’m here to see them — I love their music.” Inside, a group of women stood near the left side of the stage, excitedly talking about their favorite songs and guessing what the band might play that night.

Shortly after arriving, I met the band’s manager and then the band themselves. They were gracious with their time, incredibly kind, and genuinely passionate about what they do. I didn’t get the chance to formally interview them, but I did talk with David for a bit about their creative style, how they develop their songs, and their experience on tour. I’m hoping to set up an Artist Highlight episode with them soon.

Once the band headed backstage to prepare, I moved to the front of the stage to get ready for their set. I’ll be honest — I hadn’t had the chance to listen to their music beforehand due to my schedule, so this show was my first real introduction to their sound. When the first few chords of their opening song hit, I lowered my camera, looked at their manager, and mouthed, “Wow. This is really fucking good.” I was genuinely taken aback by how powerful that first song sounded.

Their performance was melodic and graceful, yet full of energy. Every member of the band poured themselves into each chord and each vocal line. Their passion was palpable. Fans rushed to the front of the stage, dancing and singing along to every song. You could see the excitement on their faces each time a favorite track started. During the upbeat songs, fans jumped and danced wildly; during the slower, more melodic moments, they swayed gently, fully immersed in the music.

It was incredible to witness how deeply the audience connected — physically and emotionally — to Duncan Fellows’ performance. The band played for about 40 minutes and never once let their energy dip. They delivered a memorable night for everyone in the room.
