Third Eye Blind is a band a lot of people consider one of the best alternative rock bands still touring today. To give you some history Third Eye blind formed in 1993 and are best known for their breakout hits in the late 90’s such as “Semi Charmed Life”, “Jumper” and “How’s it going to be” all of which reached top 10 billboard chart status. One of my favorite songs from the band is called “Graduate”, the song always makes me smile when I hear it. The band has put out six albums with their most recent release called “Screamer” coming out on October 18, 2019. The band has sold over 20 million albums throughout their career so far.
The band is currently on tour and we covered their tour stop at the Durham Performing Arts Center (AKA – DPAC) in Durham North Carolina. This venue is a little different then most music venues in the sense that they have a permanent seating setup. Most music venues will have designated seating area then a small area for standing only or an area for people to jump around in. The DPAC is a little different in this case because they do not have an open floor plan or even a small pit for fans to jump around in. It is a beautiful venue just not the venue you would imagine a highly energetic band like Third Eye blind to play at.
That minor viewpoint aside the band brought a very energetic show to the stage with an incredibly dynamic light show. Lead singer Stephan Jenkins walked on stage “incognito” style wearing a thin line hoodie covering his head. He did take the hoodie off mid way through the show and ran around the stage getting the crowd amp’d up. People were raising their hands up and singing along with Stephan and at one point Stephan just let the crowd sing a good portion of a song as he smiled in appreciation. The band was very energetic, and the fans were loving it. Since the venue does not have an open floor plan the fans were sadly limited in expressing their excitement by having to just stand there and pump their fists in the air. I could tell fans wanted to jump around but regardless of that the fans loved the show and were having a blast. I saw fans screaming back the lyrics as Stephan pointed his mic out to the crowd during each song. I found even myself putting the camera down and signing along with everyone else. The light show enhanced an already energized performance with simple yet complex lighting techniques that intricately used several interwoven colorful lights displays to create a blended yet smooth light show. The lights would change periodically throughout the bands performance almost matching each beat and or guitar riff depending on the song.
All in all the band brought a strong and sturdy performance to Durham NC. Third Eye Blind has a magical and successful music catalog that will go down in history has one of the great bands in the alternative music scene. With 20+ years under their belt they are still creating and still bringing a kick ass stage performance to fans around the world.
