“Anti-Flag is a band that brings punk to the forefront of their concerts with epic air jumps and punk attitude. With political undertones in their music they do not shy away from sharing issues important to them. There style reminds me of great bands such as Rancid. I did not think anyone could jump as high as Chris Barker does. Give him a bass drum to stand on then you will see the epic air he gets while playing the bass. It’s crazy and awesome at the same time. They kept a strong energy in their performance and it was exciting to photograph them. It is a great band to see live , I was not disappointed in their show. ”
Anti‑Flag: Punk Roots, Political Fire
Anti‑Flag is a punk rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, known for their sharp political messaging and unwavering activism. Formed in 1999 by singer/guitarist Justin Sane and drummer Pat Thetic, the band built its identity around themes of anti‑war resistance, anti‑imperialism, class struggle, human rights, and broader sociopolitical issues. Their music has long served as both a rallying cry and a critique of global injustices.
Over the years, the lineup expanded to include guitarist Chris Head and bassist/singer Chris Barker (#2), who replaced Jamie “Cock” Towns—himself a replacement for original bassist Andy Flag, who departed in 1996. Despite the changes, the band’s mission and message have remained consistent.
Anti‑Flag is also known for supporting progressive organizations such as Greenpeace and Amnesty International, using their platform to amplify causes aligned with their values. In more recent years, they publicly expressed solidarity with the global Occupy Together movement, further cementing their role as musicians deeply intertwined with activism.
With a career defined by conviction, energy, and outspoken commentary, Anti‑Flag continues to stand as one of punk’s most politically engaged voices.
