I have been sitting here honestly trying to think of a way to explain the epic performance Florence + The Machine put on at the Coastal Credit Union Music Park on 06/05/19 in Raleigh NC.
Florence + The Machine was a musical experience like no other that I have experienced this year. Florence walked out on stage under one spot light and the 12,000 + fans standing before her welcoming her with open arms. She moved towards the microphone with a meticulous and precise set of movements as if she were slowly floating towards the crowd. Her dress was flowing behind her and she paused as she stood by the microphone. The crowd still bellowing their love for her while she stood there as if in deep thought. She then puts her hands on the microphone and begins to sing. Once she started this only excited the crowd as their chants of love seemed to grow with every lyric she sang. The band or (aka the Machine) were playing in such a powerful way that I thought I was watching a dramatic piece during a theatrical production. While I was in the pit photographer her standing by the microphone, she suddenly moved. It was as if a jolt of lightening hit Florence and she began to dance, spin and jump while running across the stage. She went from corner to corner welcoming the fans as the band played louder and more passionately. It was something I had never experienced. I, for a moment, put down my camera just so I could focus my eyes on what I was seeing. Her voice belted out romantic tones that sounded like words but beautifully matched the echoing beats of the band. Her voice fluctuated notes in ways that I did not think could sound that smooth and perfect.
After I gathered myself, I came to and began photographing the show. During her performance, she always embraced the crowd and talked with her fans about the music. She also talked about women’s rights and made a very poignant and passionate plea for fans to show love and embrace women for the incredible human beings they are. After I photographed her during her performance, I was given the opportunity to watch her performance close to the front stage. As I watched her and the band play song after song it was truly an incredible experience. I felt as if I were watching a choreographed theater piece but with incredible aromatic dancing, flowing and fluctuating vocal tones and a powerful and romantic musical sound.
I would recommend seeing this group live. Florence + The Machine are one of those groups that if you miss seeing them live you will regret it.
