We had the honor of covering the incredible singer‑songwriter Grace VanderWaal on June 5, 2019, during her tour stop at Walnut Creek in support of the equally phenomenal Florence + The Machine. Grace stepped onto the stage and immediately made one hell of an impression — the kind that stays with you long after the lights fade.

Her voice is unmistakable: airy, emotional, and textured in a way that feels both youthful and wise beyond her years. Paired with her songwriting, she creates songs that are catchy yet poetically layered, touching on the emotions, anxieties, discoveries, and complexities people navigate through youth and into adulthood. She has that rare ability to write music that feels personal but universally relatable, and hearing it live only amplifies that connection.

Grace was clearly excited to be there. You could see the joy on her face, the fun she was having, and the genuine appreciation she showed to the crowd. She performed with a natural ease — moving, smiling, and letting her voice carry across the amphitheater with clarity and warmth. Even in a supporting slot, she owned her moment on stage.

A great musician. A great writer. And truly one of the best singer‑songwriters out there today. Watching her perform at Walnut Creek was an absolute pleasure, and it’s clear she’s only going to continue growing into an even more remarkable artist.
