SAMANTHA CRAIN LIVE!! | CATS CRADLE

Coverage by Larissa Blankenship

Samantha Crain brought her incredible voice to the Back Room at Cat‘s Cradle in Carboro, NC on July 13th. Starting the show off with “Dragonfly” from her latest album Gumshoe, Crain captivated the audience with an intimate performance. Between songs the singer shared stories of the inspiration behind her songwriting. The term “Gumshoe” has stuck in Crain’s mind since she was a child and heard it on the TV show “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”. She knew she always wanted to incorporate the term into a song and decided to do so on her most recent album. Crain also shared that she recently went through a period of stage fright.

To overcome this she has incorporated Choctaw social dance songs that she and her family would dance to at weddings and pow wows as interludes between the songs in her set. Crain said that the songs calm her down and help her to feel closer to her ancestors when performing. The crowd was treated to many songs off the singer's newest album such as “Ridin’ Out the Storm” and “Dart”, alongside a few of her older songs such as “Joey” and “Bloomsday”. Crain talked about how some of her songs have been featured in various episodes of the Hulu show Reservation Dogs. She shared that one song was actually unfinished when she sent a phone recording of it to her friend who worked on the show. The friend liked it so much that the phone recording ended up being used in the show. Crain’s impressive vocal and lyrical talent were a treat to witness live and make her an artist you do not want to miss.
