Photographing Alamo Cinema Raleigh Movie Event

Photographed by Chris Sturk

I was hired by the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to photograph a big event they put on at the Dixie Park in Raleigh NC.  This place used to house the Dorthea Dix Hospital until 2010.  There is a huge amount of land there and some beautiful places to walk around.  When I was driving up to the location I found myself looking at different spots I wanted to do some photography work at.  Click on the link so read about the hsitory of the hospital and this location.   The hospital is now gone and it is a park. When I arrived to the location I had to stand there for a moment and soak in the size of this huge outdoor theater screen.   It was held down by four different tethering lines and a power projector put the movie on the screen.  They had a rough estimate of about 3000 people scheduled to arrive.  The first movie they played was very kid friendly because we had a lot of families there doing a costume contest.  The second movie was Sean of the Dead, which is more for the adults.  They did let the families know about the second movie so they could choose to leave or stay with the kids if they wanted to.  Side note:  Sean of the Dead is a kick ass movie!

HUGE MOVIE SCREEN!

They also supplied food trucks, restroom facilities and a police officer was there to watch over the crowd.  It was a very enjoyable night and everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves.  If you are in the Raleigh area and would like to check one of these showings out, check out the website for the Alamo Drafthouse for information.  https://drafthouse.com/raleigh

I had a great time photographing the event and hope to work with them again soon on another event.
